I got a sewing machine for Christmas! I know absolutely nothing about sewing. Any good books you guys can recommend? I don't intend to do anything too fancy. I will need some sort of window treatments for the house and pillows would be great. Also, I think I should make myself a skirt since I own so few. I am quite addicted to tote bags for some reason as well.

get yourself SEW U by built by wendy. Yes i know it comes with garment patterns, but trust me. She explains EVRYTHING in a way you can really understand. I think you would love it for the no-nonsense approach to explain why you would cut on a bias, and why you measure fromt he bias when you cut etc etc etc.
for fun stuff for the home the lana jonsdotter book is nice. so explaination but little patterns for items such as tote bags.
i learned from mom and a seamstress aunt.
